Slide Door and Other Unique Car Door Types

Have you ever seen a slide door in cars? Most people don’t know that there are actually various types and styles of car doors. While it is common to see conventional and standard doors, there are many other glamorous types, some of which are even downright exotic.

To give you an idea, here are some of the most unique types of car doors, starting with slide doors.

The Slide Door

This particular type of car door is actually a rather popular one used on cargo vehicles, minivans, and commercial buses. A slide door offers easy entry for the passengers and can also ensure easy loading and offloading of goods.

This type of door is mounted on a track located on the vehicle’s side. These doors open by sliding backward and come in handy if you need to park in tight spaces.

The most popular type of slide door comes with a 3 point suspension and pens outwards and backward on the track at the side of the vehicle. Volkswagen Ag introduced this design to the market as one option for the brand’s Type 2 vans.

The Gullwing Door

Also called the Falcon Wing Door, the Gullwing door was originally designed in 1939 by Jean Bugatti for Bugatti 64, his own car model. His design was inspired by the humble seagull’s wings. This door is hinged at the upper horizontal border of the roof of the frame of the car instead of being hinged at the vehicle’s side.

The Scissor Door

The scissor door is also known as Lamborghini doors as the variation is used on the Lamborghini Murcielago. Unlike traditional car doors, this door is attached to the framework of the car by the hinge found at the front top corner of the vehicle with the use of a Scissor joint. These doors open upwards vertically instead of opening outwards as with traditional car doors.

The Swan Door

There is one difference that sets apart the Swan door from traditional types of car doors. These are hinged slightly higher on an angle to offer more space. This type of car door is common in cars such as the GTA Spano, Aston Martin, and Jaguar C-X75, just to name a few.

The Butterfly Door

This particular door is almost similar to the Scissor door as this is hinged at the car frame’s top front corner. However, this is different from the Scissor door since this is hinged along the A-pillar of the car, opening upward and outward in a fanning pattern that justifies its butterfly name.

The Suicide Door

Now, this type of door has got a name that will surely spark your curiosity. Why is called the suicide door? The design of the door has been made in such a way that that if the door is unlatched while moving, the resistance of the wind can cause you to fall out of the vehicle, a fatal occurrence at high speeds. Rolls-Royce Wraith/Phantom popularized this door type as a luxury feature that makes the exit and entry to the vehicle easier.
